Singapore
Antoine's view
In Singapore during the Seventies, when "Hippies" had a bad reputation: travelers with long hair were prohibited from entering the country. The first time I went there, in 1991, I was worried, but the customs officer who welcomed me ? had hair longer than I had!
It is true that rules and prohibition are part of life for the inhabitants of Singapore which has become a regional economic powerhouse and is completely submerged by modernism. In certain parts of the island, tropical landscapes are still common however its principal characteristic, are its colossal buildings, massive shopping centers with a diversity of nationalities.
A majority of the old districts have disappeared but there remain a few picturesque corners such as, Arab Street, the Chinese district, not forgetting the amazing ?Tiger Balm Gardens? with its thousand's of colourful statues, the legendary Raffles hotel, and some spectacular attractions like the Zoo of Singapore, one of the most redeemed in the world.
Right at bottom of the Indochinese Peninsula, Singapore is a perfect spot to visit South East Asia.
