Tahiti
Antoine's view
I'm writing these words while at anchor half a mile of the shore of Tahiti's most beautiful part, it's southern shore, from the vast coconut groves of Atimaono to the cliffs of the Pari.
It is, in someway, the Tahiti of ancient times, the one Cook and Bougainville caught a glimpse of.
Of course, progress has reached and transformed a part of the island; of course, Papeete has become a restless town, with traffic jams, where, as in every town, money is king...
But one doesn't have to go very far to discover along Tahiti's circle road views that haven't changed much since Gauguin painted them.
As far as the peninsula that extends from Tahiti's South-East, I have recently cast my anchor in a very rarely vivited anchorage, and I have sen, arriving from the beach, a canoe carrying four pretty girls, who brought me as a welcome present some of the fruits and vegetables they cultivate in their garden on the highland... Bougainville, after all, is not that far !
Tahiti, for me, boasts breathtaking scenery, especially in the practically untouched mountainous interior. The only track that crossed the island has recently been closed; the interior is covered with lush vegetation, flowers and unreal leaves; and then, fascinating people, traditions, music, not forgetting art, tapa making, tattoos.
Tahiti also gives the opportunity of meeting a fair number of wanderers who have fallen in love with this legendary island, who have found another life there, and who, often have made it a success.
Tahiti, all summed up, stands up to its legend!
